Lombok island is just sitting there waiting to be explored! An island as big as Bali but with much more coastline facing directly into the predominant swell direction. Bay after bay offers protection against the wind. Being next door to Bali, it is surprising so few good waves have been found in Lombok island so far. The best know wave for surf in Lombokisland is Desert Point, on the south west tip, which can be just as good as Grajagan or Uluwatu when conditions are right. Incredibly long rides, tubing perfectly over very shallow coral reef. The winds blow offshore from May to September. Dessert is great for tube-loving goofy footers but difficult on your back hand. There is rarely a safe pull-out in to deep water at the end, rather it just gets bigger and faster until it closes out over very sharp coral. Wear your reef boots, wetsuit and helmet at low tide. Desert Point is definitely for experienced surfers only! There are only a few rough boatsheds on the beach, with no toilets or water. Although hardcore guys sometimes camp out here, most surfers prefer to sleep aboard comfortable yachts chartered from Bali.

Desert Point needs a solid ground swell to break well, and is renowned for long flats spells. Sometimes it is only ridable foe a few hours each week. The tidal surge here is incredible because of the extremely deep water in the Lombok straits. The surge actually counteracts the smaller tides, so sometimes you only get one high and one low tide a day, instead of two. Weird!

Although some spots are more easily accessed by motorbike or yacht, a car is the best way to explore Lombok. You can rent one at the airport, Lembar ferry port or in Mataram city. Yachts regularly leave Bali?s Benoa harbor to explore Lombok and farther east. Cheap local boats can be hired at Lembongan and Lembar, but they are rarely as comfortable or safe as the modern Bali yacht charters.

Perama Tours can bus you from Kuta Bali to the quite fishing village of Kuta Lombok, a great base for surf exploring. The locals will point you towards the better surf spots. There are a dozen reefs within an hours drive of Kuta, all good on their day, though not in the same class as Desert Point. It could also be interesting to check Lombok during the wet season looking for right hander.
