SUMBAWA ISLAND

Over 100 kilometers of surf potential! The south west tip has well known waves most easily reached by yacht charter from Bali. Check the surf Travel Company, Wanasari Wisata or Tubes Surfers Bar in Poppies Lane 2, Kuta, Bali.
Yo-Yo?s offers a choice of two rights, open to all swells but easily blown out by dry season trade winds that blow hard most afternoons. Scar Reef and Super suck are seriously powerful left reef breaks with hundred meter long rides. Only Super suck is offshore most of the dry season, but it needs a big swell to break. There is just one small home stay, a hot 3 kilometer walk from Super suck at the ?Tourist Information Center? in Maluk village. The hot tip here is bring your own food and water from Taliwang because local supplies are limited. Further east near Huu, three hours from Bima airport, are great waves with plenty of good losmens right on the beach at Lakeh (pronounced Lah-kay). With rooms for over 60 surfers, it can get very crowded in July and august, even tough the winds are mostly side shore at that time of year. Early season is much better. The rainy season is more offshore, but very wet and stormy! Lakey Peak is a perfect left and right pyramid-shaped peak, with the left usually the better ride. Predictable tubes, best at low tide before the trade winds get up. Lakey Pipe is a very sucky left ledge, best at high tide. Nunga?s is the area?s big wave spot, a long thick left with many section that can handle crowds and any size swell. When every where else close out, go to Nunga?s! Two kilometers away is the periscopes surf camp with a great right tubing over a shallow rock bottom, but only surfable at high tide. Trade winds blow side shore, so try to be here for glassy morning high tides.
