Bali is the land of a thousand temples and a thousand festivals, where religious affiliation is a large number of rituals is an integral part of everyday life. A combination of traditional indigenous religions and local Balinese Hinduism Hinduism has a rich tradition of ceremonies large and small, everything from the loss of a tooth to remember the defense against evil spirits. There are five different Balinese Hindu rituals such as Dewa Yadnya, temple festivals, which deals with the worship and adoration of the gods and Buta Yadnya the sacrifice ritual refers to appease evil spirits. Others are Rsi Yadnya, rites in honor of praise; Yadnya Pitra, rituals associated with death, and Manus Yadnya, rites to purify the inner soul of sin. Among the most important festivals of Bali are Galungan, a major annual festival celebrating the descent of the gods on earth, followed ten days later by the ceremony of Kuningan. Nyepi is the other festivals, a great annual day of silence on the Balinese Hindu New Year Saraswati, a day to Dewi Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and literature devoted to the temple and Odalan Festival, an annual ceremony of the construction of a temple on the basis of 210 calendar days Balinese – is the large number of temples in Bali Odalan are held in several festivals around the island on a given day. Another important ritual in Balinese culture is the cremation of the deceased. An integral part of Balinese life is a crematoria gay and sociable affair, where a whole village comes together in an elaborate ritual, whose ultimate goal is, through the ashes of the dead into the sea This act shall sign the final separation of soul (gross) of the earthly body. Many visitors to Bali are in love with the various ceremonies that celebrate the creation of such a cosmic scale both large and intimate, personal level. Some visitors opted to Bali, a remote island paradise, where people take the time to celebrate the gods of heaven and keep the cycle of life on Earth – something missing today fast-paced, intellectually private world .

It would be impossible to visit Bali and not temples. Mainly because they are everywhere! Bali is the land of a thousand temples, and it is a good description. Temples, large and small dot the Balinese landscape. In fact, there are tens of thousands of temples in Bali, from simple to ornate, the very large, very small. There are so many temples in Bali that the government has not bothered to count them. In Bali, the word temple is Pura. Both words are used here. In Balinese Hinduism, it is estimated that the mountains are for the gods, the flat country to the people and the sea is for demons. (One reason why the old Balinese do much ocean navigation!) Most of the temples, you will find all three to be found. The Puseh Pura is the most important temple for the appreciation and veneration of the gods, the Pura Desa for the people. This temple is for the spirits and bless the people to protect. The third type of temple Pura Dalem is used to appease the demons, and seek protection against the spirits. The best time to visit a temple during the festival there. This happens only once a year for each temple, but there are many temples, he should not be difficult to find a temple festival. During a visit to the temple, it is important to show respect. Women should not wear shorts or bare shoulders. There is a prohibition of blood on sacred ground, so anyone who is bleeding, including women during their cycle should not the temple. Never stand in front of the priest, or a level above the head priest. No flash photography. Knees when kneeling other and generally tries to blend in and what others are doing. Men may be asked to wear a headscarf. These can be rented, but if you visit a large number of temples, you may want to buy your own. The temple a game does not fail on your trip to Bali is Basakih. It is often described as the Mother Temple is located at the top of Mount Agung. This is the most important temple in Bali. There are over 22 structures, some dating from the 14th Century. Here are the shrines of Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. One of the oldest temples in Bali is Pura Batu Karu Luhur. It is located 10 km west of Bedugul. It overlooks the lake, a temple of the goddess of the sea Tamblingan. If you like bats, you love Lawah Goa Temples. A sacred site for Brahma, the temple is located in a cave full of bats. They say that the caves may extend Basakih. If bats are not your style, you prefer Sangeh May Monkey Sanctuary. Take a look at your business when you visit this temple surrounded by tall trees, nutmeg. The monkeys are sneaky thieves! They especially like glasses and keys. So, make sure that during your visit to Bali, you’ll appreciate the architecture, sculpture, festivals, and sacred temples of Bali. Gunung Kawi temple situated at Sebatu Hamlet, Tegalalang-Gianyar and some 55 km from Denpasar, has unique tale to tell. The words Gunung Kawi are derived from word gunung (mount) and Kawi meaning ‘ is made’.

Gunung Kawi temple is estimated to have been made into a sojourn or hermitage by mahareshi from java. Rishi Markandeya hundreds of years ago. At that time , he was undertaking pilgrimage mission from Java to Bali. A stone plate was found where the Maharishi formerly performed austerity when he first set foot there. That’s why the place is known as Sebatu Village.
Other tales tell that sebatu is assumed to be derived from word Sauh and Maserod ( slipping) on a stone. The name of sebatu is associated with unique chronicle of Maya Denawa, a despotic king administering Bali hundreds of years a go. At the time his feet slipped on the stone and that’s how the word sebatu came to be and is still used today.

Gunung Kawi has now become a tourist object, well located and having tranquil atmosphere. In this place there are 10 showers ( spring) having magical quality. They are believed to have quality of curing illness or are medicinal for any kind of calamity striking people, in most cases many visitors do not only only pay a call on this place, but also do worship with simple oblation related to melukat ( purification bathing) in the hope they could avoid illness, obstacles and calamity. Foreign tourist began visiting this temple since 1976. Apart from the climate of its beautiful and serene nature, some of its building are original ones and have magical elements. There are at least 50 visitor coming daily to this object. Predominantly, they come from Italy, America and France among others.

Pura taman ayun is beautifully appointed temple, with its own surrounding moat, in the village at mengwi, 18 Km west of Denpasar. The history of this temple is closely associated with the beginning of raja kingdom of Mengwi, in 1627 B.C. it was built in 1634 AD at that time the ruler of the first Raja of Mengwi, I gusti Agung Ngurah Agung who later become known as Ida Cokorda Sakti Blambangan. As the royal family temple of the Raja of Mengwi, this temple is a place to worship the royal ancestor who find their rest in a special shrine known as the “Gedong Paibon”. Following the pattern of most Balinese temples, Pura Taman Ayun have three connecting temple yards. The innermost sanctum is known as ” Utama Mandala”( The Highest Circle), the middle yard as ” Madia Mandala” and the outer as ” Nista Mandala” (The humble circle).
The enter the main sanctum one must pass through a raised gateway, known as Kori agung (Paduraksa) and the the gateway between the outer and middle connect in a split gate, known as “Candi Bentar”. Apart form the “Gedong Paibon”, didicated to one ancestor, in the middle courtyard are other shrine dedicated to the various main temples in Bali. This shrine were built by Raja to ensure that his kingdom and people would able to share in the prosperity and fertility of the nation, and also to enable all the people at Mengwi to conduct the religious ceremonies at the temple, such as ” meajar-ajar” and to request holy water to protect the rice fields from pestilence, etc. There is also another shrine in the middle courtyard dedicated to the “Pasek Badak” a famous here of bygone days from Raja’s Troop. The extensive temple grounds of Taman Ayun also function as a resting place for the royal family, covering 4 hectares of land ; temples and surrounded by large moat, which use to full of lotus and lily flowers of all colours and around the edges of the moat can be found frangipani, cempaka, kenanga and other perfumed flowering ress as well as mangoestein, durian, manggo and rambutan fruit trees. The temple has always been strongly influenced by the ups and down at the Rajadom of Mengwi. In 10th, Raja Mengwi ” Igusti Agung Made Agung” lost the battle and had to retreat to escape with life in to the bordering eastern district, during the victorious Raja Of Badung the temple was never looked after properly, and the temple building deteriorated due to lack of care. In year 1911 AD, part of royal family return to their family seat at Mengwi and Pura Taman Ayun was restored, however on 20th January 1917 a violent earth-quake damaged many of existing building, repairs have been done in stage to return the temple to its original condition. The odalan’ Temple festival’ at Pura Taman Ayun falls every 210 days on day known as ” Selasa Kliwon Wuku Medangsia”. Many tourists used to visit the temple, before the second world war the family of Puri Gede Menwi still maintain the temple, assisted by committee made up of the local traditional leader such as the village official from the Mengwi District.

Have you heard about this Temple or probably you have visited while you are in Bali for holiday, yes ! Tanah Lot is one of popular tourist destination, here you can find uniqe balinese temple and amazing sunset or you can get holy-water which is a fresh water coming out from the Rock at the cave below of the temple ( fresh water at the sea)
Here is Tanah Lot History according to Balinese History – In the days of the ancient East Javanese Kingdom of Majapahit, there lived a famous saint called Dang Hyang Dwi Jendra. He was highly respected by all for his service to kingdom and its people in all matter relating to their prosperity, spiritual well-being and social harmony. He was well known for his dedication to “Dharma Yatra”-or spreading of the Hindu Religion, in lombok he was known as Tuan Semeru or Lord of Semeru. Semeru is a great volcano in East Java.

During his mission to bali in the 15th century, the ruler of Bali at that time was Raja or King Dalem Waturenggong, welcomed the saint and treated him with great respect. His teaching spread like wild fire in Bali, as he instructed and preached the way of Dharma or Duty. He also erected many temples in order to raise the spiritual awareness and deepen the understanding of the religious doctrines of Hinduism among the people of Bali.

It said that in his old age, whilst carrying his mission of Dharma Yatra at Rambut Siwi, he was led by a holy light toward east. He followed the light to its radiant source which was a fresh water spring. Not far from the spring he came to an extremely beautiful location known by local people as Gili Beo, in Balinese Gili means Coral or rock and Beo means bird- it was a huge rock in the shape of the bird. He paused at the place to meditate and pray to the good of the sea.

After a while the local people come from the village of Neraban, and he preached to them. The leader of the people was known as Bendesa Beraban Sakti or the Holy Leader of Beraban.

Up to that time, the local religious beliefs had been based on monotheism. In no time, the news spread of the presence of Dang Hyang Dwijendra, a teacher of religion and many of the villager became his disciples, gradually the follower of Bendesa Beraban began to leave him follow the new ways. This angered Bendesa Beraban and he gathered his follower and went to the saint and demanded that he leave the area, with his mystical power strength the saint lifted the great rock on which had been sitting and cast it to the sea. He the transformed his scarf into a snake and commanded them to stand guard at his refuge. He then named the place ” Tengah Lot” which means land in the middle of the sea.

Eventually the bendesa beraban acknowledged the spiritual powers of Dang Hyang Dwijendra and he himself learned the ways and doctrines preached by holy-man and become his most faithfully follower and spread the massage to his own people to join the Hindhu faith.

As a taken gratitude, before taking his leave the saint presented a holy keris or dagger, known as Jaramenara, to the head of the village. This ancient keris is kept to this day in the temple of Puri Kediri and is a highly treasured relic. Every year at Kuningan day a special ceremony is held to honour the mystical keris-on the day known as Rebo Kliwon Langkir which happens every 210 days according to the Balinese calender.
