Goa Gajah Temple in Bali

26 km from Denpasar, in the Bedulu Village there is ruin of Balinese Palace, completed with huge cave hermiting. This cave is used to be  a place to meditate for Hindu and Buddhist monks in the 11 st century.The Frightening demon head was carved at the front of the cave, while inside there is a God statue with elephant head known as “Ganesha” at the end of the west of the cave. At the opposite there is a Trilingga statue . The caved is ‘T’ shaped. You can also see there are 2 bathing places at the cave’s yard with six nymph statues and each one is holding water fountain on its umbilicus. That is as a symbol of six holy rivers in India

Gunung Kawi Temple at Sebatu Village

Gunung Kawi temple situated at Sebatu Hamlet, Tegalalang-Gianyar and some 55 km from Denpasar, has unique tale to tell. The words Gunung Kawi are derived from word gunung (mount) and Kawi meaning ‘ is made’.

Gunung Kawi temple is estimated to have been made into a sojourn or hermitage by mahareshi from java. Rishi Markandeya hundreds of years ago. At that time , he was undertaking pilgrimage mission from Java to Bali. A stone plate was found where the Maharishi formerly performed austerity when he first set foot there. That’s why the place is known as Sebatu Village.
