Bali local hero on the water is Oka Sulaksana. He started out on home made boards and borrowed equipment in his teens going to become an AsianbGames champion twice and a three time olympic competitor of windsurfing. As the son of a fisherman growing in Sanur, he joined his father at an early age spending his life on the water. Learning to surf whilst at primary school, his introduction to wind surfing came later on, competing from the age of 14 and winning the bali open 1985. After his first international competition in Singapore in 1987, Oka never looked back, the only break in his relentless pursuit of jumping the waves came after a collision with a jet ski in 1993, left him with serious head injuries. Despite this setback, he went on to compete in five South East Asian Games, three Asian Games and three olympic. What’s more of an accomplishment, are his succesfull result in the international arena, with little help from official sporting bodies He continues to work hard to support his family without the support of a select number of local businesses and individuals, oka would not be able to compete on the world stage.
In his quest to Increase awarenes in water sports and as a role model for today’s youth in Indonesia, oka set up the windsurfing centre in Sanur, to give an oppurtunity to the younger members of the community to learn safety on the water and train with the Indonesian windsurfing squad.

Eight year ago, oka established Blue Oasis Beach Club to train water sports an International level, not only for Indonesians but also for Bali’s overseas community and visitors to the island. In 2008 the blue oasis will be one of the venues for the Sea Games. When he is not competing all over the world, Oka can be found fishing, surfing or windsurfing out on the waves in Sanur.
