Sand-bottom waves with reef shape and long walls. Over the years the sandbanks seem to have become straighter, possibly due to the building of beachfront hotels and blockage of local streams. The waves might look like a closeout, but often they are quite make able-a very fast and exciting alternative to the dangers of surfing over sharp coral reefs. On full tide check out near the surf club at the end of Kuta Beach Road. On low tide join the crowds at Halfway for superb sand-dredging tubes when over 6 feet. Usually quite small, this is the best place in Bali for beginners to learn safely. You can line up on the flags and satellite dishes just past the Rama Palace Hotel. If you drive to Halfway, park 50 meters after the ?Tubes Surfers Bar? sign at the intersection of Poppies Lane 2. Then look for the crowds of Japanese and Balinese surfers who flock to Halfway every day. If it?s a bit too crowded, sometimes you can find an uncrowded bank a few hundred metres north, just before Jalan Melasti at Legian. If Kuta is too small, Legian is always 1 or 2 feet bigger.
