THE TECHNIQUES OF ASANA

by *Dr. Somvir

  • Standing Asana, TADASANA Techniques ;
    Take the standing position on both feet and put hands beside your body. Keep the balance of left and right body. Raise your hands straight up and brings the palms together on the head. Focus your sight on one single point located right in front of you. Inhale the breath and stretch your hands, shoulder and chest upwards. Raise both heels ( stand on tip-toes) so that the weight of your body lies on the tip-toes. Hold your breath and keep silence for a while in this position. When you feel it’s enough, lower your heels while exhaling your breath and then come again to initial position and unwind.
    BENEFIT : It can be used to establish physical and mental balance and its good for relieving headache. (BTN)

THE SUMATRA MAINLAND & OUTER ISLAND

19

April

This is where the real hardcore surf discoveries are being made. There are many remote islands and wild jungle shore lines to investigate over the next decade or two. Virtually impossible without sufficient knowledge of the Indonesian language, a four wheel drive car, well equipped yacht, lots of time and money! There have been a few videos made lately featuring some incredible new discoveries here, but no real names or crosses-on-maps have been published yet. Nor are they likely to be. We will have to find these spots ourselves, with the help of the friendly locals. The mainland has the good surf around Banda Aceh in the north and from Bengkulu to Krui in the south.

You can fly to Banda Aceh in the far north of Sumatra island and then travel 20 Km by local transport to Llok Nga which has OK waves and losmens. A five hour bus trip south brings you to Meulaboh which has good surf and a few cheap losmen. You can also fly from Medan. Boats and planes leave Meulaboh for Simeulue, the next big island north of Nias which is still largely unexplored for surf potential. You could also check out the 99 islands in the Kepulauan Banyak Group (?Many Island?) by catching a ferry from Singkil, about 600Km south of Banda Aceh. But be warned that the islands north of Nias are renowned as dangerous pirate areas, so be extra careful if you charter a local boat in this area. Bali Surf here !
